SHOWCASE: rDesktop software.
Following a discussion about the best way for people in an office environment to be able to sit anywhere but still always face their own desktop, one solution to that is to run as many virtual Machines on a server that people connect to from anywhere. That is valid for common office tasks, not for very demanding apps obviously. A definitive, commercial-grade solution is still to be assessed, but so far, a combination of a serious server running VirtualBox and the rdesktop remote client allows actually _any_ kind of Operating System Guest to run on _any_ kind of Client - yes, you can sit down in front of a Linux machine and fire up your old XP, or the opposite naturally.
And since it's all virtual, the server can make a backup of your running machine "image" at any time, allowing you a recovery system far superior to what you can (sometimes) get out of a damaged hard drive.
Virtualization is _the_ word in techno-buzz these days, device as small as mobile phones run virtual Java machines because it is safer and faster to restart, Web Hosting providers increase their competitiveness by providing several virtual systems out of only one server... It's really coming, and it makes sense, allowing to people share ressources rather than having expensive hardware sitting doing nothing.
OpenSOurce + Virtualization is the future, if the future we want is community-driven, with a sense of sparing our Planet; I'll get back to you on this topic, for sure.
