Howdy, Nixettes and Nixers!

Don't mind the Tropical Ice Cube not being cackling and cracking these days, our little parcel of Free Software in Phnom Penh is far from melting down, even with the return of the heat!

And the heat is on, I can tell: the meat of the news this week are around The Others, the ones that are Not So Famous as the Big Fat Ubuntu or the Mighty SuSE: Let's speak about... SimplyMEPIS and LinuxMint:

---

MEPIS 8.0

You know what? Being in the top 10 list of Linux Distros doesn't mean your are above critics, and LinuxMint took it's boatload of them in this week Distrowatch review:

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20090302#feature

It look so... OK, not 'bad', but with those newcomers unfriendliness mistakes that I didn't even bothered downloading the current .iso... [Hey, never mind, you can still request it and I, or one of my sponsors, would download it for you]

A pity for us phnompeneers, since as a KDE-based distro, it means you could (partly) have it in Khmer...

So, unless you are a half-seasoned Linux/KDE enthusiast (Mind you, it is still on 3.5.10) there seems to be limited interest to this distro, at least for this very release. Let's hope some constructive comments found on the article will make their way as bugfixes in the upcoming releases, and I will monitor that for you!

MINT 6

Meet 'Felicia', the latest of the official Mint releases!

http://linuxmint.com/rel_felicia_whatsnew.php

An astonishing feast of new, innovative features. If you think you like Ubuntu because it is user-friendly, then you ought to try Mint: As they quote it, it's Ubuntu, but user friendly. And it is built on U. anyway :) Now, if you are _not_ a newcomer, and are so cool with your geekiness allowing you to do so extra-complicated things in a black terminal in less that thirty seconds, why not doing it in one single click with Mint? I believe Mint to be _that_ cool, and from my own live test and virtualmachine install, I can tell it looks freakin' gorgeous too.
